Thank you, Dick Eastman!

I read some disappointing news this morning – Dick Eastman won’t be posting to his blog on the weekends anymore! It will no longer appear Saturday and Sunday in your mail box those two days, so that he can take some well-deserved time off.

He has been publishing since 1996, when, like so many of us, his posts started out as a newsletter. He converted it to a blog in 2004 at http://blog.eogn.com/

To show you how popular the blog and Dick has been to the genealogy community, I think everyone one of us (seasoned genealogists, that is) have met and enjoyed the company of Dick.

So I am sure that all of us wish him a well-deserved rest, and may the EOGN continue forever!

Upper Canada Village is set to open early!

Upper Canada Village, one of Ontario’s premiere museum, will be opened for its 55th season on May 6th.

It will also be celebrating the 350th anniversary of the Canadian Year of the Horse.

This horse was brought to New France in 1665 when King Louis XIV of France shipped 2 stallions and 20 mares from his royal stables. Eight of the mares perished on the journey, but the remaining horses survived the journey. They arrived in New France on July 16th, 1665.

There’s a new look to an older website

The Sudbury Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society has a new look to its website!

I knew that they were working on one, and today I took a visit.

It is a very clear design, an inviting way to present genealogy, in a non-glitzy
(is that a word?) manner. I am very impressed.

Under Reference Information drop down menu, they have put their library holdings that you can download onto your site; Our Projects – where you can download cemetery updates, and the 1921 census data; Maps - which show the District and the Townships in 1841 – Baldwin, Chapleau, Killarney, Nairn and Hyman, Sables-Spanish Rivers, and Surnames List from various publications - cemeteries, registers, funeral home data, wills, land registry documents and miscellaneous books.

So if you have ancestors in the Sudbury area, this is a place that you should check at http://www.sudburyogs.com/

They also have a Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/sudburyogs/

Saskatoon Light Infantry World War II Diaries

Secreted away at the University of Saskatchewan is a rare collection of the Second World War Diaries of the Saskatoon Light Infantry! And they have a Search Name Index at http://scaa.sk.ca/gallery/sli/search.php. What a find!

Once again, you have to drill way down in their Digital Project before you discover this, because they only have the Saskatoon Light Infantry as the title, and you may overlook this resource.

But once you go to the site, you will be astounded by what you will find there, which includes -

Summaries and Highlights from January 1940 and July 1941

The names of the officers, and other ranks

The World War II casualties.

So this might be just the resource you have been looking for to complete the history of a veteran in the Second World War.
