Names Added to Home Children (1869-1930) Online Database

The Library and Archives Canada has just issued this press release -

"Gatineau, October 6, 2011 — Library and Archives Canada is pleased to announce the release of a new version of the online database Home Children (1869-1930). More than 20,000 names of children, who came to Canada between 1925 and 1932, were added to the extended version. The names were extracted from passengers lists held at Library and Archives Canada.

The database is available at the following address:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/home-children/index-e.html

Library and Archives Canada would like to thank the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa http://www.bifhsgo.ca, and its volunteers without whom this project would not have happened".

Anyone looking for information about Home Children can send an enquiry to the British Isles Family History Society of Greater Ottawa (BIFHSGO). Since 1998, the Society's volunteers have been indexing names from Canadian passenger lists, federal government and other records, to add to the major Home Children Database that MOMCK refers to that is housed at the Library and Archives Canada website.

Although many records from the emigration organizations themselves no longer exist, some do, and there are public records (like the federal government files) that have some information, although it is not as detailed as to say precisely what happened to a particular child after he/she came to a Canadian city.

If you have an enquiry about Home Children, you can write to BIFHSGO at queries@bifhsgo.ca and our volunteers will try to help you.

Yes, a very good point, Mary Ann.

I use the Home Children database many times, and I am so thankful that BIFHSGO has done all the work on indexing the children.
