Kent Branch (OGS) Showcases New Records on YouTube

Yesterday morning, I listened to the Kent Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society on the YouTube Channel at http://youtu.be/UzNZo18W2C8. The Branch heard about new online genealogy records at the Chatham-Kent Library.

Last year, the library successfully secured a grant from the Ontario government, and published new records online at http://www.chatham-kent.ca/PUBLICLIBRARIES/GENEALOGY/Pages/Genealogy.aspx.

These records include -
  • 75 local directories published between 1875 and 2007
  • almanacs published by Soutar’s, a publishing company, between 1881 and 1890
  • municipal documents
  • Kent Historical Society publications
  • books by local authors
So visit the Library online to view these records, and see if your ancestor is there.

Manitoba Genealogical Society is going to have online databases

The MGS recently made an announcement that they are planning to put online indexes of cemeteries, vital records information etc and it will be available to members and non-members alike.  The records will be on a pay-for-view basis.

They say that they will have indexes of historical records that even Ancestry.ca does not have!

Also, some time ago, I read that the Manitoba Genealogical Society was offering a discount on membership fees if you were also a member of the Ontario Genealogical Society and/or the Saskatchewan Genealogical Society.

I had an inquiry into the society about the amount of the discount before I reported it to my readers, and now I have the answer - the discount is $5.00 CDN.

Thank to the MGS for letting us know of their plans for 2013, and beyond. This sounds exciting, and I look forward to it as I have the family of Rev. Joseph Hogg from Nova Scotia in Manitoba at the turn of the 20th century.

Manitoba to Put Local Histories Online

Here is an exciting resource that will be available tomorrow -

“MORE than 200 local Manitoba history books are only a mouse click away, thanks to a project headed by the Manitoba Library Consortium and Manitoba Historical Society, with funding from the Winnipeg Foundation.

The local histories, covering Manitoba communities from Altona to Zbaraz, bring 100,000 pages' worth of digitized Manitoba history to the website www.manitobia.ca.

Also included on the site, designed as a resource for students, teachers and researchers, are digital copies of dozens of Manitoba newspapers going back to 1871, as well as historical photos and maps.

The site will be launched Feb. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Manitoba Legislature Reading Room”.

A great day for genealogists!
