Dear Myrt’s Beginning Genealogy - Session 15

As I promised my blog on 06 January 2015 at http://genealogycanada.blogspot.com/2015/01/beginning-genealogy-study-group.html, I watched Dear Myrt’s Beginning Genealogy Session 15 this week. I will continue to watch the rest of the study group as it proceeds.

It has started to get confusing, but maybe it will clear itself up next week when we get back to the regular program.

The confusion comes because I didn’t report on Session 13 in which Dear Myrt talked about using maps to find your descendants, but I have posted it now.

For Session 14, Dear Myrt was away to the National Genealogical Conference in St. Louis, Missouri, and then on this past Wednesday, she held a two-hour discussion to cover both Sessions 14 and 15. Are you still with me?

So, on to Session 13 about maps. I thought it was very good.

There are tons of places to look at maps on the Internet for every country in the world.

One of the best places to look for Canada is at website http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~canmaps/

The session this Wednesday didn’t cover as much as I would have liked, although she did spend time on the Research Log that Cousin Russ has taken the time to produce. All of the links are in the community comments right below the day’s broadcast.

And they did explore church records in the States and in the UK, and spent some time talking about the research process.

Dear Myrt’s Beginning Genealogy - Sessions 9

As I promised my blog on 06 January 2014 at http://genealogycanada.blogspot.com/2015/01/beginning-genealogy-study-group.html, I watched Dear Myrt’s Beginning Genealogy Session 9 yesterday. I will continue to watch the rest of the study group as it proceeds.

The major topic which was discussed in Sessions 9 was -

Emigration/Immigration/Naturalization/Migration – All of these subjects were touched on by Dear Myrt in the latest Beginning Genealogy Study Group online meeting.

Although people who did have ancestor's who came to the United States, and therefore may not be interested in these records, they can still find something of interest to them.

She mentioned Steve Morse’s site (which I have used quite often, and he does have Canadian records) called One-Step Webpages, which contains ‘tools for finding immigration records, census records, vital records, and for dealing with calendars, maps, foreign alphabets’. It is quite a good site, and is at http://www.stevemorse.org/

She also talked about P. William Filby, one of the editors of the multi-book indexes used by people who are researching on passenger and immigration lists index. This is something that you should look at if your ancestor came to North America in the 16th to the 18th centuries.

She ended by talking about Tracing Immigrants Origins at FamilySearch at https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Tracing_Immigrant_Origins

It gives you a good idea of where to search, and there are three parts to this lesson, and it should be something that you should read.

The sessions so far are -

Dear Myrt’s Beginning Genealogy - Sessions 8

As I promised my blog on 06 January 2014 at http://genealogycanada.blogspot.com/2015/01/beginning-genealogy-study-group.html, I watched Dear Myrt’s Beginning Genealogy Session 8 yesterday. I will continue to watch the rest of the study group as it proceeds.

The major topic which was discussed in Sessions 8 was -

How to Search – Do you search by record group eg death records, birth records, newspapers, or do you search by following those ‘bright shiny objects’ - those records that sort of fall your way?

I have got a secret to share. Most professional genealogists search by record groups, and we usually start a new genealogy project by searching census record group.

So follow that advice, and I think you will find it will become more enjoyable to do family history.

Dear Myrt’s Beginning Genealogy - Session 3

As previously promised in my blog on 06 January 2015 at http://genealogycanada.blogspot.com/2015/01/beginning-genealogy-study-group.html, I am reporting on Dear Myrt’s Beginning Genealogy study group as it proceeds. I watched Session 3 yesterday, and the two top things that were discussed were -

1. The records that we first use to study our family.

In particular, marriage records were looked at, and we were reminded to study them carefully so as to not to make the common mistake of misinterpreting the information and dates. Remember, these records should always be transcribed.

2. Getting a Research Log set up to follow as we start to research our family.

Cousin Russ, Dear Myrt’s production man at the Google Hangouts, has prepared an outline of a Research Log at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1CXE1JFJ9HJaaGsbUPe7y0iPUX6_xnakSVL7S9XBIqUo/edit#gid=632923855

The first page shows the research process, and the second and third pages encourage us to keep records of links we use to conduct research.

Next week, we will examine more about the Research Log. Dear Myrt has asked us to have our own Research Log ready to share with people on the panel.
