Burleigh Papers Online

Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario and its archives has just announced the public launch of their latest digital initiative - the digitization of the Dr. Herbert Clarence Burleigh fonds.

I took time and checked certain family names, and found quite a bit of information - especially Loyalists families of the area. For example, it just doesn’t pertain to people in Kingston, there was information on the townships of the Bay of Quinte area too.

They say that “Through the Burleigh Family, and in particular, Peter and Evelyn Burleigh, whose generous donation has made this exciting initiative a reality, and in collaboration with the Internet Archives of Toronto the research amassed by Dr. Burleigh on approximately 1,000 families, who have roots in the Kingston region, is now available on-line”.

You can go to the website at http://archives.queensu.ca/databases/genealogy/burleigh.html

OGS Conference 2012 - Update

This year's OGS Conference — entitled Borders & Bridges: 1812-2012, and to be held in Kingston, Ontario from June 1-3 — celebrates the War of 1812, fought between Britain, Canada, and the United States.

The conference website, www.ogs.on.ca/conference2012, offers info on accommodations, registration, the program, and Kingston-area research facilities.

On the "Program" page, check out the speakers - their bios, and which lectures they are giving at the conference.

On the "Conference News" page are podcasts featuring interviews with the speakers, and the latest news on Conference events and happenings.

There is still time to register, so if you have been thinking about going but haven't decided as yet, take a moment to read about all the goings-on planned for Conference, and make your decision to join us. You won't be disappointed!

My booklet, Canada and the United States: War of 1812, will be on sale at the Marketplace. Divided into Canada and United States resources, it is full of quick facts, lists of battles fought, timelines, links to informative websites, and includes a guide of must-have books and suggested readings for both sides of the War. Available from vendors Rick and Sandra Roberts of Global Genealogy, and Louise St. Denis of the National Institute for Genealogical Studies, drop in and see for yourself why this booklet should be in every researcher's toolkit.

If the War of 1812 is too specific for your family research, try my booklet on Canada/US migration, Migration: Canada and the United States, also available from Global and NIGS. And if you can't wait until Conference to buy a copy of these booklets, visit them online. Booklets are also available from our American vendor, Leland Meitzler of Family Roots Publishing Company.
See you at Conference 2012!

The Diocese of Ontario of the Anglican Church of Canada

The Diocese of Ontario of the Anglican Church of Canada is celebrating their 150th year in Canada, and the Archives will be at the Conference in Kingston of the Ontario Genealogical Society June 1st and 3nd with their computerized index.

The Archives cover the five Counties of Leeds and Grenville, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington, Hastings and Prince Edward in Eastern Ontario.

The church registers held by the Anglican Diocese of Ontario Archives are normally accessible only at the tiny archives facility, and only for very limited hours each week. However, the Diocesan Archivist, Paul Banfield, has generously given permission for the index to these registers to be available at Conference 2012.

If they find that there are baptism, marriage, confirmation or burial records for the individuals of interest to you, they can provide you with the details (date, register volume number, etc.). You will not be able to obtain copies of the registers during Conference, as the archives will not be open on the weekend; however, you will be able to order copies by mail or email after returning home. Or, visit the archives in person if you’ll be in Kingston following the conference.

For more information, you can go to the Archives at http://www.ontario.anglican.ca/joomla/index.php?option=com_k2&view=itemlist&layout=category&task=category&id=56&Itemid=138

Kingston Cemetery Repaired

On 27 May 2008 a number of Kingston citizens concerned about the deterioration of the Lower Burial Ground of St. Paul's Churchyard in the heart of the city gathered and decided to establish a non-profit corporation to be known as The Lower Burial Ground Restoration Society.

Since then, they have repaired the burial ground, and was able to repair the wall which surrounds it.

Gene-O-Rama 2012 Cancelled

The Ottawa Genealogical Society has put a note on it's site at http://ogsottawa.on.ca/ that they will not hold a Gene-O-Rama in 2012. The reason is because the Ottawa Branch will be co-hosting the annual OGS Conference 2012 in Kingston on 1-3 June 2012.

They also say that "Ottawa Branch will also be hosting the 2012 Region VIII Genealogy Day. It’s on a smaller scale with three lectures, the Regional Annual General Meeting and a small Marketplace on a Saturday in March or April 2012. We’ll start planning it later this year and details will be available on the website."
